Meet mum and dad!
December 25, 2008
Today is Christmas day and a time to be with the family. As we often do, we went to my parents’ home to celebrate. My parents could be described as typical Macedonian village folk who migrated to Australia in the 1950s. Their home is complemented with a vegie garden and fruit trees in the backyard. They take particular pride in their garden and we, as their children, often reap the benefits with tomatoes, onions, lettuces of different varieties, pumpkins and peppers.

Being such a major part of their lifestyle, my father has even set up a rig to frighten away birds if they come too close to the garden. It is a rope that stretches across the yard from the kitchen to the back of the yard. He has attached cans, cloths etc to it so when he pulls at it, it creates movement and noise. This scares away the birds from eating the fruit and vegies.
Today I was alerted to an ad on TV for the Woolworths/Safeway campaign that my brother in-law created. And here are my mum and dad recreated! -

What a wonderful post!! Three years ago, I loved going back to Germany where my forebears came from and it was so interesting to see how my relations in Australia still modelled that heritage as well. We still grow vegetables on our farm and have a wonderful big orchard. Have you been back to Macedonia at all? Anyway happy new year to you Helen, and I have tagged you to tell us 7 things we don’t really need to know about you.

That is a brilliant ad, reminded me of my step grandfather and his garden with the tin cans rattling etc. No bird would dare take anything from his vegie patch.

Helen, this is fantastic! Love that bird scaring design! I know a few people who would be inspired by it. Great post.

Yes the ad is great. When my daughters saw it for the first time they thought it resembled their grandparents quite a bit!! It was only when they were told by my mum that their uncle Michael, had created the ad, that they fully realised that it WAS their grandparents after all.
